The Unauthorized Musical Parody of CluelessLEFAIR

“You’re a virgin who can’t drive…”
The audience calls out the lines and raises their glasses in the air.
“I guess the best way to describe the music parodies at Rockwell is that they’re basically parties,” Kate Pazakis, Artistic Director of Rockwell LA and producer of Clueless The Unauthorized Musical Parody said. This musical parody will run through Summer 2018 at Rockwell: Table & Stage located in Los Feliz at 1714 N. Vermont Ave, Los Angeles.
Four and a half years ago, after moving to Los Angeles from New York City, Pazakis began hiring people to pitch and create shows for Rockwell LA Pazakis says she had a better idea of what the space needed.
MR: What did the space need?
KP: I had an idea to have an unauthorized musical parody series. The first few I had other people write and now it’s been three and a half years of me writing these musicals– we’ve had 12 parodies so far: Clueless, Jurassic Park, Bridesmaids, Hocus Pocus, Home Alone, The Big Lebowski, Devil Wears Prada and Mean Girls.
MR: How did you change these parodies from the original movies?
KP: I love to change genders and leave ethnicities up in the air. In parodies nothing is carved in stone. This is the second time we did Clueless. The first time, Amber was played by a man. This time, a woman came in and floored us with her audition so this time, we kept Amber as a woman– Morgan Smith. She was the redheaded girl in the Wendy’s campaign forever. She made such crazy, wacko choices.. I was like, “This girl is perfectly weird and delicious, out of the box, really funny, really strange and in the best way.” Her take on the actual material was very over the top. She plays Amber, Miss Geist and Lucy, Cher’s maid. We all lovingly poke fun at the characters and actors who play the roles.
MR: Why did you choose these Films?
KP: I think people love cult favorites like Devil Wears Prada and Mean Girls for example. People love to shout quotes from their seats like, “you’re a virgin who can’t drive…” and “As If!” People love this movie and when you’re in the rehearsal process, you forget that because you want everything to be perfect. It’s an iconic 90’s film. I probably saw Clueless at least 20 times before I wrote it.
MR: Tell me about your background
KP: I’m a former broadway cabaret girl. I Sang in clubs and worked in theater. I decided to leave the business completely and move to LA. I performed for 17 years in NYC and I just wanted a changed. I wanted to do something different with my life. I was doing South Pacific with Bart Kahn and I kept thinking it was somebody else’s dream job. I wanted to write and produce.
